To some the chrome airbox cover is the appeal!,,, for others a chance to tone it down in order to class it up. This one will be painted in PPG's single stage CLV black on top of PPG's 280/285 epoxy primer. First step when painting chrome is to get some "tooth" for primer to get a grip. There is nothing worse than the look of paint chipping off chrome. Sandblasting will rough it so an epoxy primer can get good grip. |

A painted surface here is going to show flaws that were "hiding" in the chrome. When this part was welded to it's mounting brackets little dings formed at the spot welds. An extra step with some body glazing putty now will make all the difference when finished.

Here it's ready for a second priming,..block with water and 400 grit ...and then PPG's single stage CLV Concept black.
The part is isolated and turned by a robot behind a window to keep a clean dust free atmosphere, (tight like a tiger) |

Straight from the booth no buffing.
If conditions are right ie.70 degrees draft/dust control , temp, clean air etc. it can't be beat by anything out there The more I look at this black the more it looks back to chrome. .. This is a bullet proof paint... even though the bullets do go through and make a hole in the panel the paint bends and stays on there ... truly amazing tough stuff for real. |
